Oh photography.

As I look around the pumpkin patch I notice a man with his "fancy" lens, Gary Fong Diffuser and his shoot sac. He notices me with my camera in hand, looks me up and down and notices my camera is rocking out the kit 18-55mm lens then gives me that "smirk." "She's just a person playing photographer" I am sure he's thinking. Then I turn around and see a man with a "lens the size of his forearm" as a friend put it last night taking photos of his kids sitting on the hay with pumpkins in hand. I look down at my Rebel XSi and smile. She's been good to me and I don't care whatsoever if she is not the fanciest or most advanced. Hell, I'd make due with my old pentax point and shoot camera.

I know I have the talent for this. Equipment means little, it just is there to help things along. Where am I going with this blog? I have no idea. I just am sick of photographers that think better equipment makes you a better photographer or more "training" or education makes you exceed all the rest. I will NOT will NOT go to college for photography. I will NOT will NOT feel the need to get the bigger better best equipment. I will NOT will NOT sit my kid on a pumpkin waiting for that perfect smile. This is my art. This is what I feel. I want to remember my kid how she is at this very instant. It is not all smiles and sunshine all the time. No, my child has a mind of her own, she is stubborn and explores everything. She is also kind, hysterical, loving and assertive. All of this I want to capture in photographs. The word "cheese" only exists in my vocabulary for the oh so yummy dairy product. I offer very little guidance while photographing. I merely let it unfold and dance beautifully in front of my lens. Let it organically play out in front of me. I want to feel the moment even when it's years later and I am showing Leena's future partner, whomever she may choose to love, these photos.

Mr. Brayden at the pumpkin patch. :)

All this rambling aside and I must also tell you….THIS IS MY 100TH BLOG POST! YAY! :)

Peace and Love!

Good for you girly! I totally agree. You have incredible talent and an amazing eye. I don't know how many times someone has told me a photo was good because of the camera, when a good photographer can take great photos with point and shoot cameras. Yay for 100 posts! Have loved reading along!

"Hell, I'd make due with my old pentax point and shoot camera."

I totally agree with you. I wish I could remember who said it, but I read once, "A great photographer NEVER blames his camera for a bad photo," which I took to mean a great photographer makes due with what he has, regardless of whether it's a point and shoot camera, or ANYTHING. You make it work, not the camera.

I will admit, I am one of those photographers with a huge lens. I do love it for mega candid photos from far away, and concert/wildlife photos, but as I'm getting more comfortable with myself(both as a person and a photographer) I find I'm not using that lens quite so much, and instead choosing to get into the mix, being apart of what's going on, rather than observing from afar. I admire the people that have had the courage to do that from the beginning.

Whoops! Sorry for ranting a bit. Congrats on your 100th post! I came in a bit late, but I've enjoyed reading your blog since I met you. :)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having the fancy lens or camera. I just don't understand why photographers feel the need to look down on me because I love using the cheapest lens ever on my camera or use my hot pink holga to take photos. ha!

Most definitely! I'm happy any time I see someone out taking pictures, regardless of what kind of camera they're holding, hehe.
